How to hack Winshield

In my middle school days, my school was just beginning the journey into security on their new workstations. Since the administrators were not wanting to spend a lot of cash on the project, one of the tech guys downloaded a shareware security called WinShield from the internet and installed it on all of our computers. If there has ever been a truly worthless peice of software, this is it!

To gain full access to the system:

  1. Running under windows, press F3 or Windows-F (if the keyboard has a windows key). This will bring up a standard Windows 'find' dialog.

  2. Search the computer for the word 'shield' to find the winshield directory (if the administrators happened to rename the directory to something other than 'shield' leave the search field blank and select the c drive to get a listing of all files.

  3. Open the 'shield' directory and launch the setup progeam. This is either just called 'setup' or it is called 'shieldsetup' This will open the program used to set the logins and passwords for the computer.

  4. Click on the 'Change Passwords' button

  5. Enjoy your newly found access! The passwords are there, unprotected in PLAIN TEXT! You can also use this opportunity to change the passwords and cause general havoc.

It should be noted that the above information has not yet been verified by me or anyone else I know of. If you successfully bypass Winshield by using the above instructions, I would be very interested in how, specifically, you did it. I don't know which version of Winshield this works on, but I am guessing it is an early version and has since been corrected.

It should also be noted that all the methods used to bypass the program known as Foolproof will probably also bypass Winshield so be sure to take a look at the Foolproof Hacking Methods document.
